Curriculum Overview
At St Mary’s Wavendon C of E Primary School, we are an ambitious and nurturing learning community where a strong sense of belonging and creativity lies at the heart of all we do.
As a Church of England school serving children from Nursery to Year 6, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision: “Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). Our values – Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Resilience and Reflection – shape every aspect of school life and guide our children in becoming thoughtful, confident and compassionate individuals.
We offer a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, build knowledge and develop strong character. Our concept-led approach connects learning across subjects and provides meaningful opportunities for children to explore big ideas, ask questions and make links with the world around them. Our curriculum supports children not only in what they know, but in who they become.
We are committed to high standards and believe that all children can achieve excellence. We ensure learning is engaging, challenging and joyful – fostering independence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. Our dedicated team provide tailored support so that every child is nurtured and enabled to succeed.
Reading is central to our curriculum. We prioritise reading for pleasure, purpose and progress, using high-quality texts to enrich learning, expand vocabulary and ignite imagination. Alongside this, we develop children’s confidence and skills in communication, problem-solving and collaboration.
Creativity is celebrated across the curriculum – through the arts, outdoor learning, enterprise and technology. We provide rich, hands-on experiences that allow children to express themselves, think critically and explore their interests. Our aim is to nurture innovative and reflective thinkers, able to adapt and contribute positively to an ever-changing world.
As part of a diverse and inclusive community, we ensure all children see themselves represented in our curriculum. We embrace difference, promote equality and encourage every child to recognise their role as a global citizen. Through themes such as sustainability, stewardship and justice, we empower our learners to care deeply about others and the planet.
Our curriculum is not just about academic outcomes – it is about developing compassionate, morally grounded young people who live out our school values every day. We want every child at St Mary’s to leave us with a strong sense of identity, a secure foundation of knowledge and skills, and the confidence to make a difference in their community and beyond.
At St Mary’s, we strive to provide an excellent education for every child – one that inspires, challenges and prepares them for the future, grounded in love, faith and a shared commitment to growing together.
